Each year is divided into ten, 5-week rotations. This allows every resident to take one week off around the holidays during our special break-out schedule. Each resident has a panel of patients they care for in their outpatient continuity clinic. The clinics contain a great deal of variety and include the management of chronic diseases, acute care, pediatrics, office procedures and obstetrics/gynecology. In the second and third year, residents assume care for two inpatients at St. Catherine Labouré Manor nursing home.

This service is comprised of patients who normally see our faculty or residents as well as patients assigned to us through the Emergency Department. The team consists of a faculty member, PharmD, one third year resident who acts as chief, a second year resident and two first year residents. First year residents are responsible for the admission of patients through the Emergency Department and the continued care of patients on the floor and in the ICU. They are always paired with a second or third year resident who is there for assistance and teaching. Additional teaching occurs during daily rounds with the entire team. The inpatient team is also responsible for leading the hospital code team.
Family Medicine Inpatient Medicine
In order to maintain continuity, patients requiring hospital admission are managed by their resident physician if they are available. A third year resident acts as chief of the service and assists in patient management. A faculty physician is assigned to provide instruction and guidance in how family physicians serve as the patient's primary physician in the inpatient setting. Residents learn how to organize care, serve as a patient advocate and code/bill in the inpatient setting.
The night float Team is made up of a first and second year resident. The team cares for inpatients and completes admissions for the inpatient medicine team overnight. Both participate with the hospital code team as well, usually with an intensivist. The first year resident has the additional responsibility of answering floor pages. The second year resident is also responsible for OB triage and laboring patients overnight.
Second year residents are trained in outpatient gynecology and procedures including colposcopy, endometrial biopsy and IUD insertion both in our office and in private offices. The residents also participate in the management of inpatient gynecological consults, manage
s inpatient gynecological admissions, as well as participate in surgical cases. The resident on this service will also be responsible for the pre-operative and post-operative management of patients undergoing GYN surgeries.
First year residents provide prenatal care for patients under faculty supervision in the Women’s Health Clinic at the Family Medicine Center. They also care for obstetric patients during their antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum admissions at the St. Vincent’s Family Birth Place. Here they gain experience in fetal monitoring, OB triage, normal and operative vaginal deliveries, laceration repair, cesarean deliveries and routine postpartum care. Residents continue to obtain obstetrics experience into the second and third year through prenatal care, delivery and postpartum care of their continuity patients.
The Obstetrics track is designed to meet the needs of a select group of residents who desire to gain experience with high risk pregnancy management and gain competency in ultrasonography and operative OB procedures.
- Provide antenatal, intrapartum and post-partum care for women with uncomplicated pregnancies
- Management of high risk pregnancies, including preterm labor, gestational diabetes, hypertension, preeclampsia, advanced maternal age, substance abuse, etc.
- Identify and manage complications of labor and delivery in collaboration with attending physicians
- Repair complex episiotomies and lacerations
- Perform limited obstetrical ultrasound evaluations
- Develop operative skills
- Complete at least one Advanced OB elective
- Manage a minimum of 30 continuity patients
- Participate in a minimum of 20 cesarean deliveries
- Participate in a minimum of 80 deliveries
- Gain additional experience in the management of high risk pregnancies
- Participation in a scholarly (research) project
- Participation in the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) course
- Attendance at the Family Centered Maternity Care conference sponsored by AAFP (optional)
- Attend a obstetric related CME meeting
First year residents complete a rotation at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, the only dedicated children's hospital in Northeast Florida. Here, residents act as part of a pediatric inpatient team where they work side by side with University of Florida pediatric residents, area hospitalists and specialists in the care of pediatric patients. The immersion in the pediatric specialty, as well as the variety of pathology makes this an invaluable part of training at St Vincent's.
During the second year, residents have the opportunity to work with a variety of subspecialists, both in and outside the hospital. Residents may work with Pulmonary/Critical Care, Intensivists, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Hospitalists or Neurology. The rotation can be tailored to meet the resident's training needs.
First year residents also complete a rotation in the newborn nursery at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside. They are paired with a senior resident and the faculty pediatrician who will teach basic newborn care, parental counseling and circumcision. NALS certification is completed at the beginning of your first year so residents are capable to perform newborn resuscitation after deliveries if needed. Additional training is provided through daily didactics and teaching clinic with our faculty pediatrician.
First and second year residents work in the St. Vincent’s Emergency Department and Fast Track ER to gain experience in diagnosis and treatment of acutely ill patients. There are many opportunities for procedures including incision and drainage, laceration repair, lumbar puncture, intubation and central line placement.
Healthier communities mean healthier patients. The goal of our community medicine rotation is for residents to understand the effects of social, cultural and economic influences on the lives of their patients and the role that family physicians play in shaping the health of their communities. Days are spent visiting and participating in local community programs. This focus continues throughout the program as residents participate in a variety of activities in the community. These activities include working with the St. Vincent’s Mobile Health Units, Sulzbacher Center Homeless Shelter Clinic, Volunteers in Medicine Clinic and providing sports physicals to area athletes and participants in the Special Olympics.
Residents spend time during their first and third years with general surgeons at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside. They assist in outpatient and post-operative patient care and accompany surgeons in the operating room.
Second year residents rotate in private orthopedics offices to refine joint exams, discuss indications for referral, surgery and learn procedural techniques and fracture management. A sports medicine rotation is completed during the third year rotating with a board certified sports medicine physician who focuses learning on sports injury, musculoskeletal examination, prevention and procedural techniques.
This rotation is coordinated by our faculty clinical psychologist. Residents rotate in community offices and receive training in geriatric and general psychiatry, palliative care, pain and addition medicine, and pain rehabilitation. Residents also have the opportunity to rotate with the post-doctoral fellow in psychology in the Family Medicine Center to learn more about cognitive behavioral therapy and integrative care.
Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)/Radiology
ENT training is provided in a private office of the resident's choice. During the resident's radiology rotation they will work with board certified radiologists at St. Vincent's to develop proficiency in interpreting routine x-rays and become familiar with the indications for various diagnostic modalities.
The curriculum is designed to help graduates succeed, no matter what type of practice they choose. Residents spend five weeks in their third year learning the business aspects of medicine in these changing times. This rotation focuses on various aspects of practice management including billing coding, contract negotiation, Medicare/Medicaid regulations, referral practices, employee management, financial planning and patient education.
Away and Elective Rotations
Because residents have their own unique interests and practice plans, it's important the training experience be shaped to meet their needs. There is one elective rotation in the second and third year designed to offer time with a variety of physicians at St. Vincent's Medical Center Riverside, other hospitals or private offices. Each second and third year resident is also given an away rotation. During this time there is no clinic or call responsibility which allows the resident to leave the city, state or even country for further training if desired.
