Meet the new CEO chosen to lead St. Vincent’s

Five months after the sudden departure of former CEO Moody Chisholm, St. Vincent’s HealthCare has named Michael Schatzlein as its new top executive.
Schatzlein comes to the Jacksonville health care system from Nashville, Tennessee, where he was president and CEO of Saint Thomas Health, a part of the Ascension Health network, the same parent company as St. Vincent’s. He will take on his new role Sept. 8.
Schatzlein replaces Chisholm, who abruptly left the position in late March to take another job in Salt Lake City after a five-year run that included his very vocal support for Medicaid expansion in Florida. Donnie Romine, who had served as interim CEO, will return to his previous position as chief operating officer with the arrival of Schatzlein.
Schatzlein, a heart transplant surgeon, led Saint Thomas Health from 2010 until last month. He also served as senior vice president/group ministry operating executive, providing strategic advice to the ministry market executives of Indiana and Tennessee. In his role at St. Vincent’s, Schatzlein will continue this work.
Patricia Maryland, president of health care operations and COO of Ascension Health, said in a statement, “Mike is the right person to lead St. Vincent’s HealthCare as our national health ministry works in a more integrated way to transform health care. He has an exceptional track record of guiding his teams and associates to support the delivery of compassionate, personalized care within complex markets, in part by developing partnerships with physicians and other caregivers.”
Schatzlein and his wife, Liz, a broadcast journalist, live in Nashville, and will also establish a residence in Jacksonville.
For his part, Schatzlein said he was excited for the opportunity at St. Vincent’s.
“The more I learn about St. Vincent’s, the more impressed I’ve become,” he said in a statement. “The ministry has a great reputation, a committed board and donors, and associates who are caring and capable. I look forward to getting to know the Jacksonville/North Florida and South Georgia area and senior leadership as we work together to fulfill St. Vincent’s mission as part of one Ascension.”
