Outpatient Physical Therapy
Outpatient Physical Therapy refers to physical therapy services to patients who are not admitted to the hospital. The outpatient physical therapy program at St. Vincent's HealthCare is tailored to meet each patient's individual needs. Depending on the patient's diagnosis and evaluation, the therapist will determine the appropriate duration of the treatment, which may vary from a few visits to several weeks.
Physical therapy orders come from the patient's physician and are generally authorized and covered by Medicare, insurance, or managed care plans. St. Vincent's HealthCare insurance experts will facilitate the process of being scheduled and will handle any and all pre-authorizations necessary according to the individual's insurance plan.
Some of the types of problems seen by St. Vincent's Outpatient Physical Therapy Clinic include, but are not limited to, the following:
Orthopedic and sports related injuries
Balance problems or deficiencies
Stroke, amputation, and neurological disorders
Neck and back injuries
Certain treatments are passive and help to alleviate pain and inflammation. Other treatments require more active participation focused on restoring function and improving overall well-being. Generally, the patient's individualized treatment program is a combination of the two. Some of the treatment techniques or modalities used in St. Vincent's Outpatient Physical Therapy Clinic are:
- Hot/Cold therapy
- Therapeutic exercises (stretching and strengthening)
- Manual therapy
- Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation
- Neuromuscular re-education
- Functional conditioning
- Electric stimulation (Iontophoresis)
- Ultrasound (Phonophoresis)
- Gait training
- Back school
How To Schedule an Appointment
In order to see a Physical Therapist at St. Vincent's Outpatient Therapy Clinic, a patient must have an order, or prescription, from a physician. The prescription should include the patient's name, diagnosis, any instructions by the physician, and physician signature and date. The next step is to contact the department by calling 904-308-7741 to schedule an initial evaluation. A St. Vincent's scheduling and insurance expert will obtain necessary information and then assist the patient with the insurance verification process.
It is very important to make sure that the patient's order, or prescription, from the physician is in St. Vincent's office on the day of the first visit. This can be accomplished by the patient carrying the order to the first visit or by the physician's office faxing the order ahead of time. We will also need the patient's insurance card. We will make a copy and return it.
For the initial visit, the patient should wear comfortable and loose fitting clothing so we can properly assess the area to be treated. Follow-up appointments are scheduled at the end of the initial visit based on the therapist's determined plan of care.
Because physical therapists are required to have a broad knowledge base and understanding of a variety of problems that can affect movement, function, and general health, all physical therapists at St. Vincent's HealthCare have at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, and they hold a license to practice in the state of Florida. St. Vincent's HealthCare also has physical therapist assistants as part of its Rehab and Sports Medicine team. These professionals also hold a license to practice in the state of Florida.
Physical therapists at St. Vincent's HealthCare establish goals with the patient once the initial evaluation is completed. These goals will focus on reducing pain and achieving an optimal level of physical function and independence. As part of our goal, we provide the patient with education and a personal exercise program so that strengthening continues and a fitness level is maintained.
