Prehab
Easing Minds Before Healing Bodies
As part of the rehabilitation process at St. Vincent's HealthCare, patients are expected to attend pre-operative education, or "Prehab," prior to undergoing Total Joint Replacement surgery. This is a one-time class offered weekdays on both the Riverside and Southside campuses. Riverside classes are offered Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m and Tuesday or Thursday from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Southside classes are offered everyday at 9:00 a.m.
The class provides valuable education to the patient, which will ease patient apprehension, establish patient expectations, and make recovery easier and smoother. The pre-op class is a coordinated effort between several St. Vincent's HealthCare (SVHC) departments to make Total Joint Replacement an efficient process for both the physician's office and the patient.
A Team Effort
During the class, the patient will receive information from several SVHC departments, including Care Management, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Pre-Admission Testing. The presentation is easy to follow, and all patients receive a booklet and DVD so minimal note taking is necessary.
A coach is a family member or friend who will be with your during the recovery period. You are not required to bring a Coach, but if you have someone available, we strongly encourage participation. Your coach will be able to reinforce teachings and precautions as well as help you as you recover. They will be your support and provide encouragement for you as you progress to restored mobility.
Class registration is coordinated through the patient's surgeon when scheduling the surgery. For more information, please call Erin Calloway Orthopedic Coordinator, 904-308-8777.
