The Realize Gastric Band is a minimally invasive surgical procedure where an adjustable silicone ring is placed securely around the upper part of the stomach. The band is connected to thin tubing that is attached to the Realize Injection Port that is just below the skin. Your band adjustments are made through this port by injecting saline solution until we reach the desired tightness of the band.
The amount of restriction from the Realize Band limits the amount of food you can eat at one time. It also slows the flow of food from the upper stomach to the lower stomach. This means you'll feel full sooner and stay full longer. As the Realize Band helps you eat less food, your body will stop storing excess calories and start using its fat energy supply. The goal is to lose a healthy one to two pounds per week. This procedure is FDA approved and can be removed if necessary.
This procedure is performed at both St. Vincent's and St. Luke's.
