Heart Failure Center of Excellence
When you’re having a heart attack every second counts. St. Vincent’s, in conjunction with local EMS rescue teams, has a protocol in place to quickly transport and treat patients suffering from heart attacks…particularly those having a STEMI or ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction. During a STEMI, one of the heart’s major arteries that supplies oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the heart muscle is blocked. This artery must be opened via balloon catheterization as quickly as possible in order to save the patient’s life. It is vital to call 9-1-1 if someone is having a heart attack because on the way to the hospital, EMS crews determine if the patient is having a STEMI and alert the hospital in advance to mobilize teams in the cath lab. All local hospitals are not equipped to handle a STEMI but both St. Vincent’s facilities are equipped and our “door to balloon” times are better than impressive.
