The Department of Pharmacy Services is committed to delivering high quality pharmaceutical care by providing a broad scope of services that are sensitive to the needs of the patient, the medical community of St. Vincent’s, and the institution.

It is our belief that the establishment of patient oriented pharmacy services provided by skilled pharmacy practitioners must be an integral part of the medical care rendered at St. Vincent’s HealthCare. The department assumes its inherent responsibility for establishing and maintaining comprehensive, accurate, and efficient drug distribution services. The Department of Pharmacy Services seeks to ensure the rational, safe, and judicious use of medications through professional vigilance, an active pharmacy and therapeutics committee, and the provision of drug information and education services to the professional staffs of St. Vincent’s.

Pharmaceutical Services

The Department of Pharmacy Services is staffed with approximately 100+ associates, including pharmacists, technicians, residents, interns, and clerical support in an inpatient and outpatient setting. The department utilizes automation technology and profile dispensing machines throughout the hospital. Comprehensive pharmaceutical services include:

  • Unit dose distribution
  • Sterile and non-sterile compounding
  • Total parental nutrition
  • Chemotherapy
  • Advanced technology support
  • Drug order review
  • Drug information
  • Drug interaction monitoring
  • Pharmacokinetic monitoring
  • Target drug monitoring programs, including renal dosing, IV to PO conversion, and therapeutic interchanges
  • Antibiotic stewardship
  • Patient counseling

Professional Standards 

The pharmacy staff is encouraged to pursue and continue their professional development. The department offers Pharmacy Grand Round meetings, which includes ACPE continuing education credit. Pharmacists are eligible for reimbursement for attendance at professional meetings and professional certifications such as Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS).

The department is also actively involved in teaching the future of the pharmacy profession. St. Vincent’s is one of the preferred teaching facilities for pharmacy students from Florida A&M University, University of Florida, NOVA Southeastern University, Palm Beach Atlantic University, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, and South University. The full-time staff offers 20+ years of preceptor experience and clinical training. The pharmacy also offers a summer internship program to first and second year pharmacy students. In addition, St. Vincent’s Pharmacy has a fully accredited American Society of Health System Pharmacists Post Graduate Year-One (PGY-1) residency program.
