St. Vincent’s Creating Nearly 600 Thanksgiving Meals for Families in Need

November 23, 2015

Associates at St. Vincent’s HealthCare, a member of Ascension, the nation’s largest Catholic and non-profit healthcare system, will prepare nearly 600 warm Thanksgiving meals for Northeast Florida families in need. This will be the 22nd year in which St. Vincent’s Riverside has prepared meals and it will be St. Vincent’s Clay County’s second year.

“We are fortunate to be able to live out our Mission to care for those who are struggling the most in ways that extend beyond healthcare,” said St. Vincent’s HealthCare President & CEO, Mike Schatzlein, M.D. “I am so thankful to all of our associates who volunteer before and on Thanksgiving Day to provide these meals to our neighbors. This important work creates an opportunity for conversations and connections that might not otherwise occur.”

St. Vincent’s Riverside will create 500 of the meals for Meals on Wheels clients using:

  • 200 lbs. of turkey
  • 150 lbs. of green beans
  • 150 lbs. of mashed potatoes
  • 150 lbs. of stuffing
  • 150 lbs. of cranberries

“We are excited to once again partner with St. Vincent’s Riverside and North Florida Transportation in what has become a wonderful Thanksgiving tradition,” said Aging True CEO, Teresa K. Barton. “The meals these volunteers make and deliver always make our clients so happy.”

In addition to the work in Jacksonville, St. Vincent’s Clay County will work with the Clay County Council on Aging, a local NJROTC group and various community members to prepare and deliver approximately 70 meals to families in need.

Members of the media are invited to join us in Riverside at 9:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day as dozens of taxi drivers line Shircliff Way (a new location this year) to fill their cars with holiday meals. The drivers donate their time and gasoline to make sure the meals get to their destination.

Members of the media who wish to ride along with cab drivers or meet with Aging True’s Meals on Wheels clients should contact Tourea Robinson at 904-807-1320.
