St. Vincent's CEO steps down after one year
By Alexa Epitropoulos, Jacksonville Business Journal
The CEO of St. Vincent's announced he will step down after serving in the office for just over a year.
Dr. Mike Schatzlein, who was appointed to the CEO role in August 2015, will step down as of December 31, the hospital said in a statement. Chief Operating Officer Tom VanOsdol will serve as interim CEO after that point.
Schatzlein was appointed to the role after Moody Chisholm stepped down unexpectedly in March 2015 for a new role at Intermountain Healthcare.
In addition to serving as president and chief executive officer, Schatzlein has other roles in the Ascension health network. He serves as senior vice president of Ascension Healthcare and Group Ministry Market Executive with oversight responsibilities for the Ascension Indiana and Tennessee Ministry Markets. He previously served as president and CEO for Saint Thomas Health in Nashville, Tennessee, also in the Ascension family.
Schatzlein had a long track record in medicine, starting at Indiana University, where he was trained in surgery, and the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, where he was trained in thoracic surgery. He practiced cardiothoracic and vascular surgery in Fort Wayne, Indiana from 1980 to 1994, and performed the first heart transplant in northern Indiana in 1985.
