St. Vincent’s hospitals get Gold-Plus awards

By Charlie Patton

St. Vincent’s Riverside and St. Vincent’s Southside have earned the Get With the Guidelines-Heart Failure, Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. They are among 13 Florida hospitals to receive the award. Hospitals that earn the Gold-Plus distinction have been shown to reduce patient length of stay in the hospital, reduce readmission rates and have improved treatment rates and clinical outcomes.

According to the American Heart Association, about 5.1 million people suffer from heart failure. Each year 670,000 new cases are diagnosed and more than 275,000 people die from the disease. However, many heart-failure patients can lead a full life when their condition is managed with proper medications and healthy lifestyle changes. St. Vincent’s offers patients a comprehensive heart failure clinic, which provides education for patients and families to help them manage the disease during hospitalization and after discharge.
