By: Action News
Middleburg, Fla. -- The first new hospital in 40 years in Clay County opened its doors Tuesday morning.
The opening comes after eight years of planning and construction. Hospital leaders said previously half of Clay County residents were going out of the area to seek care. Previously, people in or around Middleburg had to drive to Orange Park or Riverside in Jacksonville for the closest coverage.
The hospital also brings 700 jobs once a new medical doctors building on the campus opens by December. 300 new employees are currently working now at the hospital. St. Vincent's is also expected to bring $70-80 million annually to the local economy. St. Vincent's Hospital also boasts new technology, like a palm print scan to expedite patient care and video conferencing with doctors.
