Gloria Dobies, RN, BSNJOB TITLE: Diabetes Educator/Inpatient Diabetes Education Coordinator

YEARS IN POSITION: I have worked at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Southside for the past three years.

BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE: I was a critical care nurse and nurse manager of a medical-surgical unit. I also worked as a patient and community educator and nursing school instructor prior to becoming certified in diabetes education.

DESCRIBE YOUR POSITION: I provide diabetes education and self-management skills to patients while they are in the hospital. I am responsible for staff education. I participate in community education and health fairs.

WHY YOU LOVE YOUR JOB: I have the privilege to work for a hospital that truly allows me to represent the core values to help support community outreach work. The leadership encourages all efforts and initiatives towards excellent nursing care for the patient with diabetes. I am bilingual, which gives me the opportunity to communicate, relate and teach to a diverse population. I have a passion for my job. It drives me. I will be completing my Master of Science in Diabetes Education and Management from Columbia University in early 2013.

MOST INTERESTING PART OF THE JOB: Every day is different. It brings challenges and opportunities. Every one of my patients is an individual with preferences, values and beliefs. I learn as much from them as they do from me. I am humbled and enriched.

SOMETHING PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOUR JOB: I graduated from The Southeast Institute of Culinary Arts as a trained chef and this allows me to help my patients make healthier choices of food and better ways to prepare it. It’s all about the food!

IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD? Yes, of course. Diabetes is a progressive disease. It can be managed though, not always easily. Do not stop taking care of it. You can live a long and productive life with the proper selfmanagement skills, a good healthcare team, a support network and self-determination.
