First Coast Students Receive New Lesson and Game to Stop Bullying
St. Vincent’s HealthCare has partnered with Florida Blue to educate students about new ways to put a stop to bullying in Duval, Baker, Clay, Nassau and St. Johns county public schools. In support of National Bullying Prevention Month, schools around the country and here on the First Coast are using the first-ever interactive, pro-social mobile game to address one of the nation’s leading issues affecting our youth: bullying.
Teachers now have access to Awesome Upstander!, an anti-bullying program through HealthTeacher, an online health education curriculum brought to students courtesy of the St. Vincent’s HealthCare Foundation and Florida Blue. HealthTeacher gives teachers access to useful lesson plans on various health and wellness topics, including the social issue of bullying. St. Vincent’s HealthCare Foundation, with support from Florida Blue, is underwriting the curriculum and access to research-based products designed to get kids moving and to develop healthy behaviors that last a lifetime.
Awesome Upstander! is the first anti-bullying game for young kids that teaches them how to deal with bullies. The mobile game is a side-scrolling fun adventure where players must race through school cafeterias and bathrooms to rescue a target from a bully. Along the way, players must collect enough friends to stand up to the bully together.
“Everyday thousands of students miss school for fear they will be bullied,” said Jane R. Lanier, President of St. Vincent’s HealthCare Foundation. “St. Vincent’s wanted to make sure teachers and students have access to this important curriculum in order to better protect our children and families.”
The game can set the standards for teaching elementary-aged kids how to be an upstander, a person who knows how to intervene in a bully situation in a safe and positive manner. More importantly, Awesome Upstander! also reinforces the concept of respecting and protecting others by empowering children to take action against bullies by getting help from peers and adults.
Awesome Upstander! can be played online for free at http://www.awesomeupstander.com/ or purchased in the Apple App Store or Google Play for $.99. For more information on Awesome Upstander, visit www.awesomeupstander.com.
