St. Vincent's breaks ground in Clay, hospital due in 2013

A huge crowd gathered in Middleburg to watch officials from St. Vincent's HealthCare break ground for its long-awaited hospital in Clay County.

More than 500 people showed up at the 37-acre site on Branan Field Road near Blanding Boulevard to witness the ceremonies June 23. Moody Chisholm, president and CEO of St. Vincent's HealthCare, repeated a phrase to the crowd that he has said frequently in the past months, telling them, "Nobody is more excited about being in Clay County than me."

The groundbreaking has been a long time coming, with St. Vincent's' first efforts to put down roots in Clay County dating to August 2005, when it first filed a "certificate of need" with the state. And according to Chisholm, the need for a new hospital in Clay County has done nothing but increase since that time, despite slowed growth due to the recession.
